Special Inks There are many "hi tech" products that are used to detect a fraudulent document and among the best are inks of different types, both covert and overt in nature. Covert inks are known to a few people within a specific organization, and overt inks are known by the general public. The key to detecting a fraudulent document is knowing what the specific function of the ink specified on the document does, how it reacts and how to identify them. The following list is of ink that needs no ( or little ) mechanical assistance for detection. Water Fugitive inks....... Are used mainly for printing security backgrounds on documents. They react with water and will show if a document has been attacked with a water based reagent. Erasable inks.................. Show if a document has been attacked with an erasure or any means of abrasion. Any attempt to erase writing will destroy the document. Solvent sensitive ink... WIll show if a document has been attacked with a solvent. This ink is used for the background of documents such as a simulated water mark. Penetrating inks............ Cannot be removed with abrasion or solvents as the ink penetrates the entire thickness of the document. Even if the ink on the surface of the document has been erased. Thermochromic inks.... Change colors ( reversible and irreversible ). This type of ink can change colors at different room temperatures Photochromic ink.......... UV light required, or sunlight. They react the same as Thermochromic ink. Optical Variable ink....... Changes colors when viewed from different angles ( as on currency ). Reactive inks.................. Foreign chemicals will change the color of the document such as the marking of a chemically treated pen. Metallic ink..................... Prevent photocopying. The three hardest colors to copy or scan are gold, silver and bronze. Magnetic ink................... Widely used for machine reading such as when a bank processes a check by computer. Infra Red ink.................... Disappears under infrared light. This is an excellent source to foil the forger and counterfeiter. Luminescent inks............ Rely on luminescence generally used for covert application. Either an inexpensive UV lamp or infrared source is needed. * Foil Stampings.............. or holographs are mainly used on credit cards. When held to light at a 45 degree angle and rotated there is 3 to 4 seconds of movement that can be seen with the naked eye. * Electronic ink.................. There is a new electronic ink being developed and will be used primarily for commercial application ( as in signs ). This ink looks like ordinary ink but can be changed by electronic means ie: from green to red or the type of font can be changed electronically. * Not a true ink.
